Releasing Soon: Atom – A Love Story

This week on Releasing Soon, we have a chat with one of the cast members of “At0m – A Love Story”. The movie, that juxtaposes science with mainstream entertainment, is a novel concept – one that the Indian film industry has been lacking for long. Today we have with Naga T Vetty, who is part of the cast and has agreed to shed some light on what the movie is all about.

WRT: The Truth Behind the Acronym

“He is healthy,” said the doctor, holding a bundle of squirming flesh that was baby Walbert-Russell Trencherman. He was legally born on 15 May 1970 in Alamo (Texas). Co-incidentally this was the same day in 1940 when a certain Dick and Mac McDonald founded the McDonald Corporation. What does McD have to do with this story? Everything!

‘Ad’ing up the errors

I sat there fidgeting, adjusting my tie over and over again. After all, this was one of the biggest advertising campaigns ever thought of in human history. One killer blow, and Google would be history. I went over my folder again – indulging in small talk with my superior.

No withdrawals please!

This was something I wrote a while ago. There are a lot of small time banks and financial institutions that are shady at best – and their name does not inspire trust. So, what does a typical employee at one such bank think about? Read on.

A bitter pill to swallow AKA Keanu fights his demons

I have never been the pill popper – preferring to let my body fight out any illness that I might get. However, I do need to consult a doctor once in a while to ensure that it’s a fair fight. It’s like Sunny Doel against the army in Gaddar – he needed the hand pump to make it a fight fair. While the potency of treatments are widely debated, one thing that scares me is the side effects of these pills. From creating dependency on these drugs to causing unwanted complications, one needs to be very careful while popping pills.

Traffic Tetris and how to solve traffic problems…

I like driving. And, I like the concept of road trips – which by the way does not mean getting high on any intoxicant while on the road. What I like is the whole ritual of driving or riding. When I had the bike (I still do, but I guess my fascination is dwindling) it meant putting on a jacket, helmet and a pair of sunglasses. Now that I have a car (a beautiful Fiat), it involves… well just the sunglasses. Like with all motoring enthusiasts, I am disheartened by the current state of traffic in, well India. Coming from the pits of traffic hell that is Aurangabad, I have seen people in vehicles come in five directions. Where Aurangabad traffic forms the basis for the real life demonstration of Brownian Motion, traffic in other cities like Mumbai, Bangalore or Pune have sheer volumes. In this post, I present a few suggestions on how to address our traffic problems.

If TV shows were repackaged for India…

Indian television has never been great at originality. Most TV shows have been a poor copy at best. Some have been subtle, some blatant and some copied in a way that doesn’t even make a sense in the Indian context. Take for example – CID. Which police officer would wear a suit in India? And the offices would put any corporate to shame! I could go on and on about how TV series are in a state of akrasia (I recently learned it and was aching to use it), instead here are a list of ‘Indianized’ TV shows. If you do think of more, do leave a comment!

Common Admission Test and Schrödinger’s CAT

The Common Admission Test (CAT) has eluded, tormented and troubled students, working professionals and any other group of MBA aspirants across India for sometime now. I too belonged, on two occasions, to the aforementioned groups. When the results for 2010 intakes were announced, it triggered a flashback of my experiences. Of all that came back to me, I still vividly remember the angst and restlessness I felt on both occasions I attempted CAT. Thus, to all you souls pursuing CAT dependent courses, I explore the philosophical side of CAT in the hope that it helps you.

Business of football & why Branson won’t invest in Spurs

Football as a business, in recent years has seen a lot of investment from billionaires, millionaires and consortiums with financial clout. Football also goes a long way in appeasing ego’s of all the stakeholders involved. From Roman to Oman, football is also helping club owners brand and market themselves.  Of the top six, all clubs have strong financial backing – with the exception of Tottenham Hotspur. While the club has been financially stable, it hasnt stopped fans (especially a friendly gora from London) from hoping that a billionaire will come their way too. Maybe someone British – like Richard Branson.
